In this report the concept of the \"spectral norm\" of an algebraic extension field over a field with a non - archimedean valuation is introduced. In the fisrst part of this paper all power multiplicative norms on a finite extension of a field with a non - archimedean valuation are determined by means of the spectral norm. In the second part it is shown, that the norm of uniform convergence of an affinoid algebra can be interpreted as the spectral norm of a suitable field extension. In this way a systematic approach to several fundamental theorems of non archimedean analysis is gained.
